Council members split over the measure and over how, or whether, to acknowledge Palestinian deaths, with residents packing the chamber, protesting, and sharply questioning the city's role in international issues.
   

• This Bay Area 4-bedroom home is under $300K — do you qualify? (ktvu.com) — A regional affordable homeownership alliance that also serves East Palo Alto is spotlighting a rare chance to buy new three- and four-bedroom homes in Walnut Creek for $262,750 to the mid-$300,000s, far below typical Bay Area prices. Income-qualified first-time buyers must meet credit and down-payment rules and enter a city-run lottery by Oct. 30, with a virtual info session on Oct. 21.
   

• 'Heathens' chronicles five people challenging their fundamentalist upbringings (paloaltoonline.com) — East Palo Alto will help host this year's United Nations Association Film Festival, which runs Oct. 15-25 across Palo Alto, Stanford, East Palo Alto and San Francisco. One highlight is "Heathens," a new documentary about five people leaving fundamentalist Christian backgrounds, premiering Oct. 24 in Palo Alto and aiming to spark frank conversations about belief, doubt, and religious pluralism.
