DWP Wants to Teach You How to Landscape

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will offer classes to teach gardeners of varying skill levels drought-tolerant landscaping.

LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is offering a series of classes for customers and professionals alike to learn techniques for creating drought-tolerant landscaping, the utility announced.

The Los Angeles Outdoor Landscape Academy classes include a beginner session, an intermediate hands-on workshop and an advanced course for professionals. The topics covered include turf removal, drought-tolerant plants, water-efficient irrigation, stormwater harvesting, groundwater infiltration and methods for creating healthy soil.

The academy was announced during the unveiling of a demonstration garden outside DWP headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. The garden features examples of desert and Mediterranean-style landscaping, and each plant is tagged with a bar code that can be scanned to obtain more details about the species.
