In Phantoms Go Down, Ms. Shepherd-Oppenheim chronicles the journey of three siblings as they make their way down to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to scatter their mother’s ashes. Along the way, the youngest sister, Rosalind, snorts their mother’s ashes and becomes possessed by her ghost. As the other siblings strive to get their mother’s ashes to Baja and free their sister from possession, they are forced to confront the ghosts (literal and figurative) of their childhood. In this dark comedy, Ms. Shepherd-Oppenheim explores themes of memory, family, and loss while the siblings fight a hilarious and dangerous cast of characters along the way.
The play also integrates new types of media and marketing in an attempt to make theater competitive with movies: the ticket prices are kept low ($15.00), the media and advertising campaigns feature “trailers” on the website, and “Tweet Seats” are used to chronicle audience members reaction to the play as the story unfolds.
In this age of new media, we embrace all opportunities to reach our audience. With the right material and perimeters, live-tweeting a show gives potential audience members a feel for the story through their peers and influencers' eyes. We extend the invitation to seasoned theatre-goers as well as newcomers to share their experience of the performance (without plot spoilers, this is a new play!). Seats in the back will be reserved for those invited or interested in live-tweeting, and guidelines distributed with tickets confirmation. These guidelines include the twitter accounts associated with the show, hashtag for the performance (#PhantomsGoDown) and others that may be relevant (#LAthtr, #newplay, etc). Tweet seats will be limited so contact us to reserve your tickets soon! "For non-tweeters, we will reserve seats in the first few rows upon request."
