Community Corner

Practical Solidarity : Letter Writing Social

Join us from 3:00 – 5:00 pm in the Micheltorena School and Community Garden on the third Sunday of the month through June – April 21, May 19, and June 16, to write letters to political prisoners. If you’ve been meaning to get involved with this practical act of solidarity with those behind bars, this is your chance to get together with others in a beautiful and supportive setting.

Stamps and writing supplies will be provided along with a list of current prisoner addresses, background information on their incarceration and helpful hints about writing to prisoners.

We’ll also be accepting book donations for the Prison Library Project, whose mission is to provide free reading materials to inmates nationwide. The PLP offers services to a wide range of communities within the prison system: librarians, chaplains, drug/alcohol and HIV/AIDS support groups and others. The PLP receives nearly 300 letters a week from inmates and each year mails over 12, 500 packages of books, audio books, and magazines to individuals and libraries in 600 state and federal prisons and detention centers throughout the U.S. – www.prisonlibraryprojects.org
