Fire Burns Area Strip Mall

An electrical short circuit ignited a greater alarm structure fire in a Hollywood strip mall that caused $160,000 in damages, a fire official said.

The fire was reported at 3:43 a.m. at 5918 Santa Monica Blvd., said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The fire was in the center unit of the strip mall and also enveloped the attic, Humphrey said. The facade collapsed.

It took 86 firefighters 24 minutes to put out the flames, he said.

The fire caused $150,000 worth of damage to the structure and $10,000 worth of damage to its contents, he said.

The damage was confined to the structure and there were no injuries, Humphrey said.

The fire was across the street from the landmark Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
