Five Things: Buzz Bands LA's Kevin Bronson

Man about town Kevin Bronson (truly, I've never known anyone to take in as much live music as Kevin does) takes us on a tour of five of his favorite local haunts.

Music writer, promoter and supporter Kevin Bronson has been covering the LA beat for years. After leaving the LA Times three years ago Bronson founded Buzz Bands LA, a digital manifestation of his relentless search for the best in local music.

In addition to his online exploits, Bronson presents many a gig in LA and was tapped to curate the annual Also I Like to Rock series at the Hammer Museum. Radio listeners should make a note to check out his new radio program every Sunday night on KCSN (88.5 FM).

Buzz Bands LA celebrates its three-year anniversary with a show Tuesday, Oct. 25, at featuring Everest, Hands and Death to Anders. Kevin, in his own words, below.

Favorite Pre-Show Feeding Frenzy: . I'm still looking for the marina [macaroni & cheese], and from the name you'd expect Air Supply on the stereo and wait staff in sailor-get-ups [macaroni & cheese]. But thankfully AYC is light on the kitsch and heavy on the small plates [macaroni & cheese]. It's best-suited to a starving blogger's budget during their Wednesday evening happy hour, when plates [macaroni & cheese] are 5 bucks. Not big on the designer cocktails, but did I mention the macaroni & cheese?

Favorite Late-Night Blast From the Past: Super Soul Sundays. The weekly dance party at takes me back to my high school days, riding the bus with the basketball team and listening to tunes on a GE portable cassette player (stuff that was recorded by propping the recorder next to my record player). Enough ancient history, though -- DJs Dia Becker and Jennifer Tefft rock the danceable old stuff, and to see the floor full of people of all ages and stripes brings a smile to my crinkly old face.

Favorite Taco Truck: . Simply solid fare, and you could start an artists' colony with the musicians you meet hanging in the parking lot Alvarado Street. Among Echo Park's club-going populace, you frequently hear more heated debates over folks' favorite taco trucks than you do their favorite bands.

Favorite Moments in My Favorite Local Landmark: Dodger Stadium. Back in my sportswriting days, the Dodgers used to host a baseball game for members of the media. Just being on the field in one of baseball's most beautiful settings is thrilling enough, but to actually stand at shortstop and field ground balls satiated all those boyhood dreams. Oh, and being the press box for Kirk Gibson's home run in the 1988 World Series wasn't too shabby either.

Favorite Music Mecca That Looks Nothing Like a Mecca: . The ingenious re-purposing of the old jewelry factory on Allesandro Street has brought a lot of talent to the neighborhood. Now partitioned off into recording studios and rehearsal spaces, the monolithic brick building is a thriving, labrynthian place whose walls are alive (literally) with the sound of music. They have fun open houses too.
