Five Things: Dane Sundseth

Today we hear from Echo Park's Dane Sundseth--artist manager deluxe--as he hips us to his favorite neighborhood haunts.

Roadside Graves, The Henry Clay People, Blair, Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros, J. Roddy Walson & The Business...those are just a handful of the artists Dane Sundseth has managed--or has had a hand in managing,--over the years. That's in addition to running Yukon Promotions PR. In addition to his taste is music, Dane also has a nose for the best brews and eats in L.A.  Below, in his own words, are some of Sundseth's nearby favorites.

Best Dodger Game Strategy

I used to live on Laguna Avenue just above Sunset Boulevard. So it was easy enough to just walk over to Dodger stadium.  Now that I’ve moved closer to Silver Lake, I still find the easiest way to enjoy a Dodger game without the hassle of parking is to show up an hour or two before the game, park in my old neighborhood and make a pit stop at Short Stop for a couple $2 PBRs with some other Dodger fans.  After a few, the 15-minute trek up hill isn’t so bad, and then it’s all downhill after the game.  Trust me, once you see the traffic trying to filter in and out of there while you walk by, you won’t be sorry.

Best Up and Coming Establishment

will be opening some time soon in the old theatre at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Alvarado.  The people opening it own a great little place called Tony’s Darts Away in Burbank which has a hefty selection of IPA’s and gourmet sausages (vegan ones too!) and Mohawk Bend will be an extension of that concept with 72 beers on tap (yes, really!) and a full menu which will include wood fired pizza and many vegan options.  As a vegetarian and native Oregonian who enjoys a good IPA, I can not wait.

Best New Venue

I used to love walking down to the Echo--and between it and Spaceland. Those are still my favorite places to catch a show. But after seeing a couple great local bills at Lot 1, the place has really impressed. It has an Echo Curio/Pehrspace spirit in its bookings, but it's executed much better.

I recently saw four of my favorite songwriters perform on a Sunday there:  Aaron Kyle from Le Switch, Ross Flournoy from Apex Manor/Broken West, Andy Creighton from World Record and Joey Siara from Henry Clay People.  One of the better nights of music I’ve experienced in the past couple months.

Best Little Cafe

It may not be Intelligentsia, but you can't beat the charm of the on Alvarado. My old roommate Sam from The Parson Red Heads basically lived there on his days off, and I would often join him for some coffee while I worked on my laptop. He would read and befriend everyone who worked and frequented there, and we'd eat their amazing peanut butter cookies.

Best Brewery

Okay, so it's the only brewery, but the nearby Eagle Rock Brewery is a very short drive. They're the only local brewery on our side of Los Angeles that churns out great microbrews on a professional level.

The tap room is open Wednesday through Sunday, and on weekends they always have a great local food truck in the parking. If they don't, they encourage patrons to order food in.

The populist IPA is my fav. It is a classic West Coast IPA with a crisp finish. Revolution XPA is my back up choice. The brewery also features gues taps too. The staff is passionate about what they are doing and very friendly too.
