Ayala is proud to present a collection artwork by artists from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Kentucky and Mexico that
embody what author Gloria Anzaldua described as the “Coatlicue State” a term
used to describe the “internal whirlwind” which “gives and takes away life,”
“invoking art,” and that is “alive, infused with spirit.”

There will be a special
presentation by artist Diane Kahlo
discussing her art installation “Wall of
Memories”: Commemorating the missing and murdered women of Juarez with a
special screening featuring a short film by Lourdes Portillo from 6:00pm-
6:30pm as part of the opening reception scheduled activities.
On May 10, 2014 from
6:30pm – 7pm, participating artists, scholars, and community members will
discuss the art inspired by Coatlicue
the feminine diety that comes from Aztec mythology. Coatlicue
derives from the Nahuatl language
meaning “the one with the skirt of serpents.” The word for serpent is coātl. "Mother Goddess of the
Earth who gives birth to all celestial things", "Goddess of Fire and
Fertility", "Goddess of Life, Death and Rebirth", and
"Mother of the Southern Stars."
A portion of the proceeds from art sales and show tickets
will be donated to the Natalia Lizeth
Lopez Scholarship Fund and organizations
working to raise awareness and put an end to femicide in Juarez, Mexico.
