Silver Lake Photographer Documents the Lives of Construction Workers

Amy Tierney's new ''Building Lives'' series wants to build awareness of the diverse faces of these workers.

Amy Tierney, a prominent Silver Lake based photographer and community advocate, explores the often undertold story of L.A.'s construction workers and families in a new series by LAANE's Construction Careers Project entitled "Building Lives."

In 20 photos Tierney showcases the diverse face of construction workers (female and male) on their worksites and in their homes.

Open to members and donors of LAANE only, the show runs Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Solidarity Ink Gallery located on 1749 N. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90039.  The images will be available online as well for public viewing.

Tierney told Patch why this project was something special and important to her:

Patch: The images of the construction workers and families are very 'real', was it important to only do color?
Amy Tierney: Documenting in color was a choice we spoke about when brainstorming the project.  We wanted viewers to know these lives are happening now, in real time, and not at a distance, or of another time as black and white often conveys.
Patch: Do you plan to show these pictures online?
Amy Tierney: Images will be online via my blog. LAANE originally commissioned the images for their "Building Lives" event on June 21 to spark additional dialogue between their donors, union representatives and the construction workers. They will be displaying images on their site too after the event; they also wanted additional imagery for their promotional archive, and is talking about other ways to use the images on posters and shirts to open up the story of our city's construction workers even further.
