Dvořák wrote his tuneful, dancing Violin Concerto in 1879 for the great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim, who was also the inspiration for Brahms’ Violin Concerto, written the year before. Dvořák revised the work extensively on Joachim’s suggestions, but the violinist was never completely satisfied and eventually returned the score to its composer in 1882. Dvořák revised the Concerto yet again, and in October 1883 it finally had its successful premiere in Prague and was soon introduced in Vienna and London, as Dvořák’s music swept Europe in the 1880s.

Come for:

“…an exceptional performance of Dvořák’s Violin Concerto by Frank Peter Zimmermann… There was electricity in his sound…You felt the physicality of his performance.” (The New York Times)

Dvořák: Carnival Overture
