Driver Dies After Fleeing Traffic Stop, Flipping Car

Contra Costa sheriff's deputies tried pulling over the vehicle in El Sobrante after motorist allegedly ran a red light, officials said.

SAN PABLO, CA – A driver speeding away from a traffic stop flipped his car early this morning in San Pablo and died at the scene of the solo crash, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office.

Just after midnight, a deputy attempted to stop a gold Lexus at the intersection of San Pablo Dam Road and Mifflin Avenue in El Sobrante.

The driver ran a red light at roughly 50 mph, then led a pursuit at speeds that reached 100 mph on surface streets until the deputy stopped the chase for safety reasons and lost sight of the suspect vehicle, sheriff's officials said.

Roughly 12 seconds later, the deputy found the vehicle. It had rolled over several times, landing on the roof and trapping the driver inside. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the driver died at the scene. His name is not yet being released.

Investigators are not yet certain why the suspect fled from the initial traffic stop. Anyone with additional information about the case is asked to contact the sheriff's office at (925) 313-2600.

The case is being investigated by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, the sheriff's office and the San Pablo Police Department.

At least one person has died following a high-speed pursuit involving Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office deputies that ended in a crash early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol and sheriff's officials.

The solo-vehicle crash occurred just after midnight on San Pablo Avenue near the intersection with Road 20, according to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

No further information is immediately available.
