26-Year-Old Richmond Man Arrested for Market Shooting

Police officials credit witnesses for the quick identification of the suspect.

Richmond police arrested a 26-year-old man allegedly responsible for a shooting that occurred on Sunday afternoon at a local market, a police lieutenant said. Officer Marshall Pagaling responded at 12:05 p.m. to reports of shots fired in Bayview Mart at 1025 S. 47th St., according to Richmond police Lt. Felix Tan.

Upon arriving to the scene, Pagaling received information that the suspect had just walked out of the market, police said. According to police, Pagaling attempted to contact the suspect, who fled. Pagaling chased the possibly armed suspect on foot and was able to detain him.

Police identified the suspect as Stephen Barreras, 26, of Richmond. According to Tan, officers discovered a loaded, blood-stained pistol at the market that was determined to have been used by Barreras in the shooting. According to police, about 20 minutes later a resident reported a shooting victim in a nearby park. The victim was suffering gunshot wounds in the leg and foot, Tan said.

Witnesses of the shooting were shown video surveillance footage and identified Barreras as being responsible for the shooting, Tan said. According to Tan, some type of physical altercation had also occurred between the suspect and the victim before the shooting. The victim was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition, police said. The motive for the shooting is under investigation, according to Tan. Barreras was booked into jail, Tan said.

“We appreciate the community residents for stepping up to help the police,” Tan said. “This was a very clear example of community partnership.”
