70-Year-Old Dies At Casino After Trespassing Arrest

Police were called to a casino late Saturday to help remove a man from the casino. Just hours later, he was dead.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Authorities are investigating the death of a 70-year-old man who died in jail after being arrested at a nearby casino, authorities said.

San Pablo Police were called to San Pablo Lytton Casino around 10:44 p.m. Saturday over reports that a banned guest was refusing to leave the property.

Casino security staff told San Pablo police dispatchers that they were trying to handcuff a man who was resisting, according to the San Pablo Police Department.

The man, from El Cerrito, was in handcuffs when officers arrived, according to a statement released Sunday.

Police arrested him on suspicion of trespassing and took him to the county jail.

San Pablo officers did not use force, according to the statement.

While at the jail, the man experienced an "unknown medical emergency," police said.

Jail personnel and Contra Costa Fire Protection District firefighters provided medical assistance and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police are withholding the man's identity until they contact his next of kin.
