BART Strike: Chaos for Commuters, Fun for Kids

Not everyone is gnashing teeth over the strike-paralyzed BART system and congested Bay Bridge.

Kids at a day-care center are having fun putting the empty parking lots of the El Cerrito Plaza BART station to good use. 

Several times a day, teachers and parents of Willow Street Schoolhouse have been taking the youngsters out to the empty lot to practice riding their bicycles and scooters. 

A spacious lot like this to accommodate a group of ten or so kids on their bicycles is hard to come by on a normal day. 

"The BART strike creates complications for the adult world but huge benefits for kids," said Ian Kahl, the pre-k teacher.

For the last two days of the strike, the day-care center has been using the empty lots for supervised kids' recreation and will continue to do so as long as the strike goes on. 

While the BART strike creates chaos for adult commuters, for young "motorists," the fun has just begun.
