Can you describe your business?

I am the owner and primary instructor at El Cerrito Martial Arts academy. We mainly teach the Gracie Brazilian style of jiu-jitsu, known as one of the world's most effective and fastest growing martial arts. We have classes for kids, teens, adults, and even a family class where kids and parents can practice together. We also have a Muay Thai kickboxing program with classes for fitness or self-defense taught by a certified trainer.

Can you describe Brazilian jiu-jitsu? How does it differ from other forms of martial art?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is known for its emphasis of technique over strength. It is a martial art that is suitable for ages 3 years old to 70 years old to practice.

What is your history in martial arts?

I started practicing traditional Okinawan karate at the age of 5 and continued through to my early twenties. After discovering the fascinating and highly functional art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, I began training intensively with a renowned black belt for the last nine years.

How long have you had your business in El Cerrito?

We have been open since February 2008.

What is your history in the Bay Area?

I have ties to the Bay Area through family and have been living here for the past 10 years. I grew up primarily in Australia and still try to go back once per year.

What is your experience of running your business in El Cerrito?

It has been a great experience. I have wonderful students and families that I enjoy teaching.

What do you do for fun?

I like to travel with my wife, and of course practice jiu-jitsu!
