The Contra Costa County coroner’s office is asking for help finding the family of a man found dead on an on-ramp to Interstate Highway 80 in Richmond last month. The man was found at about 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 8 when a possible body was reported along the shoulder of southbound Highway 80, according to Contra Costa County Sheriff’s officials.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol and the Richmond Police Department responded and found the remains of a man in the advanced stages of decomposition, sheriff’s officials said. The man was later identified as 64-year-old Michael Reed Smith. His next of kin has not been found, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s officials describe him as a 6-foot white man with a weight of 132 pounds. He had gray hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a brown vest-jacket and brown jeans, but did not have shoes or socks.
