Demonstration of Painting a Landscape in Oils from Photo Reference

Paul Kratter will demonstrate painting a landscape in oils from a photo
reference at the monthly El Cerrito Art Association meeting at 7:00 pm
on Sept. 8 at the El Cerrito Community Center.

Paul Kratter attended Art Center College of Design, graduating with a BA
in Illustration.

For the next 22 years he freelanced as an illustrator in the advertising
field, concentrating mainly on sports and wildlife subjects, working for
the NFL, various baseball teams, The Nature Company, and for zoos,
aquariums, and museums.

He illustrated a number of children’s books, including his ABC book,
“The Living Rainforests,” for which he received the Communications Arts
Annual award in 2002. Around this same time he became interested in the
immediacy of the plein air approach and started painting in the East Bay
hills near his home. He began to show in galleries and join plein air
events.

His style changed almost overnight, although his approach remained
intact, utilizing solid drawing skills and portraying strong graphic
shapes. Painting outdoors became a passion. He continues to participate
in a number of plein air events annually in California and beyond. Each
has its own unique topography, light, and challenges, which force him to
keep his work fresh and loose.

The September 8 meeting will be held in the Garden Room of the El
Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane, El Cerrito. The evening
begins at 7:00 pm with social time and a “mini art show” of members’
work. A brief business meeting is held at 7:30, followed by the speaker.

El Cerrito Art Association meetings are open to the public, and visitors
