El Cerrito Man Arrested in Marin County Auto Burglaries

Police say they caught him with the stolen goods.

An El Cerrito man has been arrested in connection with two November auto burglaries in San Rafael, police said Thursday.

Richard Curtis Applegate, 47, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, possession of stolen property and giving a false name to a peace officer.

On Nov. 25, officers with the San Rafael Police Department responded to the area of 100 Pelican Way on a report of two auto burglaries. Police said the suspects gained entry into the vehicles by breaking the locks to the doors and took several items from the vehicles.

A security camera in the area captured the suspects getting into a U-Haul pick-up truck and fleeing the scene.

Investigators were able to determine the license plate of the truck, and on Wednesday, officers located the truck parked in front of 831 B St. in San Rafael.

Investigators recognized one of the individuals with the truck, later identified as Applegate, as one of the suspects seen on the security camera tape, police said. Applegate was taken into custody, and officers searched the vehicle and located property stolen from the Pelican Way burglaries, police said.
