El Cerrito Man One of Two Killed in Separate Richmond Shootings

A man and a teenage boy who were killed in separate shootings in Richmond and North Richmond on Friday night have been identified. In North Richmond, 16-year-old Rodney Frazier Jr. was shot dead in front of a home in the 300 block of Market Avenue in North Richmond around 9:20 p.m. Friday, a Contra Costa County coroner’s deputy said Monday. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. No suspects were arrested and the killing remains under investigation.

Around 10 p.m., suspects opened fire on a car near the intersection of Sixth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Richmond, according to police. Officers arrived on the scene to find that the victim’s vehicle had crashed into a parked car and the driver had been shot. The driver, identified as 29-year-old Charles Jackson Jr. of El Cerrito, died at the scene.

A woman who was also in the car at the time of the shooting and crash suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital and released. Investigators have not made any arrests in connection with the killing and are looking into the possibility that it may have been gang-related, according to Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov. The killings were followed on Saturday night by two more shootings in Richmond that left one man in critical condition and another with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to police. Abetkov said the man who was critically injured was shot multiple times near the intersection of Don Way and Harrison Drive in the city’s Parchester Village neighborhood at about 5:45 p.m. He was taken to a hospital with critical injuries but is expected to recover, the sergeant said.

Police said a second shooting happened around 10:10 p.m. That victim suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was able to get himself to a hospital where he was treated and released. No arrests have been made in connection with either shooting.
