El Cerrito Police Report Phone Scam
Someone is posing as the police and demanding money for bail.

EL CERRITO, CA — The El Cerrito Police Department is reporting a phone scam that involves callers impersonating the police department. Several people have reported receiving the calls.
"The caller identifies himself to the victims as an ECPD officer," ECPD said in a release. "They are using some type of technology to make the caller ID show as if they are calling from the ECPD facility."
The phony police officer tells potential victims that there's a warrant for their arrest. The person is then told to send a money order for bail.

"If you receive this sort of telephone call, hang up immediately," ECPD advises. "The Police Department, nor any other law enforcement agency is going to call people and collect money for bail over the phone or via a money telegram system."
