In 1953 six nuns docked in San Francisco and fanned out to establish Catholic schools in cities across northern California. In 1955 the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary opened St. Jerome School in El Cerrito. During the baby boom years they taught large classes of fifty students, educating thousands of El Cerrito children over the years. They also served the community by visiting nursing homes and the homebound in El Cerrito.
On May 5, St. Jerome Church will celebrate their 60 years of service with a Mass of Recognition and Thanksgiving, followed by a reception for the Sisters. Those who have memories of the Sister are invited to send them to bcortese@berkeley.edu to be included in a book being sent to their motherhouse in England.
Join us for this wonderful celebration of service and recognition for these wonderful sisters.
