A screening of the documentary film, "Of Civil Wrongs and Rights: The Fred Korematsu Story.” Korematsu was one of the few Japanese Americans to defy the 1942 U.S. Executive Order 9066 requiring all people of Japanese ancestry to evacuate the West Coast.
Following the film, Karen Korematsu will discuss her father's refusal, arrest, conviction, and resulting U.S. Supreme Court case. Ling Liu of the Fred T. Korematsu Institute for Civil Rights and Education will present information about their organization's efforts concerning civil rights and current and past injustices.
Korematsu received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, and became the first Asian American to have a statewide day named after him, the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution.
