Extensive Water Damage to Richmond Police HQ After Fire

Sgt. Phil Sanchez said a short in the electric system caused the fire.

A fire Sunday morning at the headquarters for the Richmond Police Department will not affect operations or investigations, police said. The fire started at about 8:30 a.m. at 1701 Regatta Blvd. in the detective bureau’s conference room on the second floor, police Sgt. Phil Sanchez said.

Fire sprinklers in the conference room automatically activated and water from the sprinklers and firefighters put out the fire, Sanchez said. He said fire damage was limited, but the conference sustained extensive water damage. He said a short in the electric system caused the fire. No one was injured, he said.

Sanchez said that detectives will temporarily relocate to the patrol officers briefing room in the headquarters building while the conference room is repaired. Police have been leasing space for their headquarters in the building since 2006, Sanchez said.
