Joan Hoffman Presents Her Oil and Watercolor Paintings

She will also show some of the historical paintings that influenced her style

Joan Hoffman will present her oil and watercolor paintings at the monthly El Cerrito Art Association meeting at 7:00 on October 12 at the El Cerrito Community Center. She will also show some of the historical paintings that influenced her style. She will discuss techniques with warm and cool colors as well as strong darks, in the style of early California painters, such as Maynard Dixon and L.P. Latimer. Both native sons, Dixon and Latimer studied art in California and were prominent Bay Area artists from 1880-1920s. Her discussion will include History of American Landscape Painting, her outdoor experiences studying and painting nature, and her dedication to mentoring artists.

Joan celebrates forty years as a professional artist with her oil and watercolor plein air paintings, primarily landscapes of the American West. Her impressionistic field paintings reflect her adventures exploring remote and wild landscapes, where she maintains integral connections by teaching, painting, and preserving these wild places.

Joan hosts painting retreats in Southern Utah, Steamboat Springs, CO, and Sorensen’s Resort in the Sierras, where she teaches basic and advanced techniques of painting and composition. Joan is especially known for focusing on the four points of “shape, value, color, and brushwork (texture)”, and enjoys mentoring painters to achieve their goals. She continues her years of teaching painting, drawing, and woodblock classes through Point Reyes Field Institute in California, and lectures independently on The History of American Landscape Painting, National Parks, and Public Lands. Her paintings are on exhibit at: Portico Gallery, Santa Barbara, CA; White Hart Gallery, Steamboat Springs, CO; and Cow Canyon Trading Post, Bluff, Utah.
