Man Killed on I-80 on Easter Sunday Identified

The fatal crash lead to three other collisions.

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office today identified a man who was killed in a car crash on Interstate Highway 80 in San Pablo on Sunday. Around 5:50 a.m., 24-year-old Vallejo resident Thomas Weller was driving a 2000 Honda Accord west on Highway 80 near San Pablo Dam Road when his car crashed into a pillar near the right-hand shoulder, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle caught on fire and Weller did not come out of the car, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said. The crash led to two other collisions after a good Samaritan pulled in front of Weller’s car and used his own fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, Wilkenfeld said. As the passerby was working to douse the fire, he was hit by a passing car and suffered major injuries, according to Wilkenfeld.

The 36-year-old San Pablo man was transported to John Muir Medical Center. While officers were responding to the scene, a person driving a Ford Windstar rear-ended a Chevrolet Malibu, causing minor injuries, Wilkenfeld said.
