Negotiators End Standoff by Persuading Armed Suspect to Surrender

Negotiators with the Richmond Police Department talked an armed and dangerous suspect into peacefully surrendering at the end of a 5-hour standoff Tuesday morning, police said. Police surrounded a residence in the vicinity Valley View Road and Tierra Drive around 6 a.m., acting on information from a two-week investigation into recent gun violence indicating that the suspect, who was on probation, was in possession of drugs and illegal guns.

There was also a young child living in the residence, according to police. Negotiators contacted the suspect by phone and he eventually surrendered around 11:30 a.m. The child was found unharmed, police said.

While searching the residence investigators allegedly found an AR-15 style assault rifle and a .40-caliber handgun, both of which were stolen, and two illegal high-capacity magazines.

Police are urging Richmond residents to report anyone illegally in possession of a firearm by calling 911 if it’s an emergency or (510) 233-1214. Callers can remain anonymous.
