NY Teen Pleads Guilty to Killing Richmond Man in 2014 Crash

Deepak Kumar had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana prior to the crash, prosecutors said.

A man pleaded guilty on Tuesday in New York to crashing into the vehicle of a Richmond family, killing a 55-year-old father, as they took an East Coast trip in 2014, prosecutors said.

Deepak Kumar, 19, pleaded guilty to 14 charges for the collision, including aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree manslaughter and driving while impaired by the combined influence of drugs and alcohol, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. With the plea, Kumar admitted to killing Richmond resident Pierre Antoine on Aug. 19, 2014, as Antoine and his family were visiting relatives on the East Coast, prosecutors said.

They were driving through New Hyde Park at about 11:30 p.m. that day when Kumar sped through a stop sign and struck their vehicle. Kumar had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana prior to the crash, prosecutors said. Antoine suffered severe facial injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said. His wife and 6-year-old daughter reportedly suffered serious injuries as well.

Kumar, who was 17 at the time, was arrested soon afterward by the Nassau County Police Department, according to prosecutors. He pleaded guilty before a trial was set to begin. The court agreed to sentence the defendant to four years in prison, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced on March 23.
