Seven Cal Players Given Honorable Mention All-Pac-12

Bryce McGovern of Danville, Michael Barton of Richmond and Jared Goff of Novato are among the seven to earn the recognition.

Seven Cal players earned honorable mention selections to the 2014 All-Pac-12 Football Team announced by the conference Tuesday evening during Pac-12 Football Weekly on Pac-12 Networks. Sophomore quarterback Jared Goff was an honorable mention all-league choice for the second consecutive season. Junior tight end Stephen Anderson, sophomore linebacker Michael Barton, sophomore offensive lineman Chris Borrayo, senior defensive tackle Austin Clark, junior running back Daniel Lasco and all-purpose/special teams player Bryce McGovern were first-time honorable mention picks.

“Each of our players honored by the Pac-12 today had tremendous seasons and were very deserving of this recognition,” head coach Sonny Dykes said. “We’ll have most of them plus many others returning next season and are looking forward to their continued contributions as we build our football program.”

Cal finished the 2014 season with a 5-7 overall record and 3-6 mark in the conference to place fourth in the Pac-12 North Division for its highest showing since the 2011 team was also fourth. Cal’s four-win turnaround in 2014 was its largest since the 2002 squad was 7-5 overall after the 2001 club finished 1-10.

89 – Stephen Anderson, TE, 6-3, 215, Jr., 2L (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills HS)
Anderson is a candidate for the 2014 Burlsworth Trophy given annually to the collegiate player who began their career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. He finished the 2014 season with 46 catches for 661 receiving yards and five touchdown catches, all career highs with the receiving yards second on the team, receptions fourth and receiving touchdowns tied for fourth. His 14.4 yards per catch were also fourth on the squad and the best average for any Pac-12 receiving in the top-10 in the league in receptions or receiving yards per game. Anderson recorded his totals in 10 games and eight starts after missing the first two contests due to injury for an average of 66.1 receiving yards per game that was the best on the team and also gave him his top Pac-12 (10th) and national (71st) rankings through games of November 29. He had a pair of 100-yard receiving games with seven catches for a career-high 136 yards and one touchdown vs. Colorado and a career-high nine grabs for 117 yards at Oregon State. Anderson ranks fourth among all active Cal players with career totals of 60 receptions, 786 receiving yards and five touchdown receptions over 24 games played and 13 starts, with all of his statistics other than games played coming over the last two seasons.

8 – Michael Barton, LB, 6-0, 225, So., 1L (Richmond, CA/De La Salle HS)
Barton played in all 12 games with 10 starts in 2014 and led Cal with 80 tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss (-16 yards), while adding 1.5 sacks (-8 yards) and two pass breakups. Barton ranks 17th in the Pac-12 through games of November 29 with an average of 6.7 stops per game and had a season-high 12 tackles against Colorado. Barton leads all active Cal players with 15.5 career tackles for loss (-42 yards), while his 144 tackles are second and his 3.5 sacks (-24 yards) rank fourth. He also has three career pass breakups over 23 games played and 13 starts.

66 – Chris Borrayo, OL, 6-3, 300, So., 1L (Paramount, CA/Paramount HS)
Borrayo started 11 of 12 games at left guard in 2014 for an offensive unit that through games of November 29 ranks in the top 20 nationally in five categories – passing offense (5th, 346.0 ypg), first downs offense (6th, 319), scoring offense (12th, 38.3 ppg), fourth-down conversion percentage (12th, 67.9%, 19-28) and total offense (15th, 495.2 ypg). Cal also set or tied 12 offensive team school records including single-season marks for passing yards (4152), passing touchdowns (37), total yards per game (495.2 ypg) and first downs passing (188). The Bears set modern-era school records for points (459), points per game (38.2 ppg) and touchdowns (61) that were second all-time behind the 1920 team (510 points, 56.7 ppg, 72 touchdowns), while tying modern-era records for PAT (56) and PAT attempts (57). Borrayo has started 16 of the team’s last 17 games at left guard dating back to the final five contests of his 2013 true freshman campaign.

54 – Austin Clark, DL, 5-11, 270, Sr., 3L (Tampa, FL/Plant HS)
Clark played in 11 games with 10 starts as a sixth-year senior in 2014 and was second among the team’s defensive linemen with 22 of his 23 career tackles, while adding 1.0 tackle for loss (-1 yard) and one quarterback hurry. Clark had a career-high five tackles against UCLA. His performance helped the 2014 Cal rushing defense improve from 86th nationally (188.6 ypg) in 2013 to 38th (144.6 ypg) through games of November 29. Clark played in 28 career games with 10 starts.

16 – Jared Goff, QB, 6-4, 210, So., 1L (Novato, CA/Marin Catholic HS)
Goff broke 11 school records in 2014 including single-season passing yards (3973), passing touchdowns (35) and total offense (3929) while completing 316-of-509 passes (62.1%) with seven interceptions for a 147.59 passer efficiency rating that was the fourth-best single season in school history. His totals for passing yardage and touchdown passes are also both seventh on the all-time Pac-12 single-season rankings. Through games of November 29, Goff ranks among the nation’s top 10 in six individual categories including passing yardage (2nd, 3973), touchdown passes (T4th, 35), passing yards per game (5th, 331.1 ypg), completions per game (5th, 26.33 cpg), points responsible for (8th, 212) and points responsible for per game (10th, 18.0 ppg). Other single-season Cal records broken by Goff in 2014 include touchdowns responsible for (35), 300-yard passing games (7), consecutive 300-yard passing games (6) and most consecutive passes without an interception (185), with the latter two also all-time school records. In addition, he set three single-game school records in 2014 with 527 passing yards against Washington State and seven regulation touchdown passes and seven regulation touchdowns responsible for against Colorado, while his 92-yard completion to Daniel Lasco in the same contest is the longest pass play in school history. Goff’s 7481 career passing yards, 35 passing touchdowns and 7375 yards of total offense are all third in school history, while he has already registered all-time school records with 12 career 300-yard passing performances and 17 250-yard passing games. Goff has completed 636-of-1040 passes (61.2%) in his career with 17 interceptions for a 135.13 passer efficiency rating that ranks fourth on Cal’s all-time list. He has played in and started all 24 games possible over the last two seasons.

2 – Daniel Lasco, 6-0, 210, Jr., 2L (The Woodlands, TX/The Woodlands HS)
Lasco became the first Cal player to rush for 1,000 yards or more since Isi Sofele in 2011 by totaling a team and career-high 1115 rushing yards in 12 games played and 11 starts in 2014. Lasco led Cal with 12 rushing touchdowns and 14 overall while adding a two-point conversion to finish with 86 points second only on the club to the 89 scored by kicker James Langford. He also added 33 receptions for 356 yards and two scores for a combined total of 1471 rushing and receiving yards, which were the most by a Cal player since 2008 when Jahvid Best combined for 1826 (1580 rushing, 246 receiving). Through games of November 29, Lasco ranks among Pac-12 per-game leaders in scoring touchdowns (3rd, 7.2 ppg), rushing yards (6th, 92.9 ypg), all-purpose yards (9th, 122.6 ypg) and overall scoring (10th, 7.2 ppg). He is also in the top 40 nationally in rushing TD’s (T24th), rushing yards (33rd) and rushing yards per game (39th). His 12 rushing scores rank tied for ninth on Cal’s all-time single-season list. At one point in 2014, he scored at least one touchdown in 10 consecutive games and had a rushing score in seven straight. Lasco’s 92-yard touchdown reception from Jared Goff against Colorado is the longest pass play in school history. He had single-game career highs in 2014 at Oregon State when he rushed 30 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns. Lasco is Cal’s active career leader in carries (283), rushing yards (1541), rushing touchdowns (15), overall touchdowns (17) and points (104), while he is second in total offense (1541) and third in all-purpose yards (2035). Lasco has added 44 receptions for 434 receiving yards, four kick returns for 60 yards, 21 tackles and two forced fumbles over 32 games played and 12 starts.

27 – Bryce McGovern, ST, 5-10, 195, Sr., 3L (Danville, CA/Monte Vista HS)
McGovern played in all 12 games off the bench and was Cal’s Special Teams Player of the Year as a starter on five of six units. He both garnered the most special teams snaps and garnered Cal’s most special teams points. He finished with a total of 27 tackles and also had the team’s lone blocked punt of the season against Stanford, when he was also pushed into duty at safety and recorded a career high nine tackles and his lone pass breakup. McGovern played in 47 of 49 possible games all off the bench during his Cal career, finishing with 35 tackles to go along with his blocked punt and one pass breakup.
