Suspect Arrested, Charged in Hit-And-Run Death of Man
Obed Obeso, 32, of Richmond was identified by police as the man suspected of running a stop sign and smashing into Anthony Tonti's car.

A suspect was arrested and charged this week for allegedly blowing a stop sign in Richmond on Friday and colliding with the vehicle of an elderly man who later died, police said. Obed Obeso, 32, of Richmond was identified by police as the man suspected of running a stop sign and smashing into 77-year-old Anthony Tonti’s vehicle at about noon Friday on Solano Avenue and Ventura Street.
With the help of the public, Obeso was arrested on Monday at 7:35 a.m. as he rode as a passenger in a vehicle on San Pablo Avenue, according to Richmond police. The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that he was charged today with felony counts of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death or serious injuries.
Police said Obeso fled the scene on foot after he allegedly ran a stop sign in a Ford Ranger pickup truck and plowed into Tonti’s Ford Fusion on Friday, police said. Tonti, a Walnut Creek resident, was transported for treatment of life-threatening injuries but died shortly thereafter, police said.
