"The Thin Man" at the Cerrito on Thursday, February 13

"The Thin Man," a delightful comedy/mystery  was one of the most popular films of 1934 and was nominated for four Oscars (best picture, actor, direction and screenplay). Hollywood, always looking for the next sure thing, made five sequels.

Critic Roger Ebert called "The Thin Man" "a drawing comedy with dead bodies," and it was made as an inexpensive B-picture. Yet it has great style, with elegant interiors and costumes that flatter the photogenic cast: William Powell, Myrna Loy, Maureen O'Sullivan, and a young Cesar Romero.

The interiors are simple and elegant, and the black and white photography flatters the loungewear and formalwear worn by a great-looking cast (which in addition to Powell and Loy, included Maureen O'Sullivan and a young Cesar Romero).

Asta, Nick and Nora's wirehaired terrier was a huge hit, as he helped to solve the crime.  He appeared in many movies in the 30's, but this was his biggest part.  His original name was Skippy, and at one time he earned $250 a week--certainly one of the biggest Depression-era salaries around.

"The Thin Man" plays on Thursday, Feb. 13 at 7:00--all seats are $8.00. The Cerrito is located at 10070 San Pablo Avenue, phone (510) 273-9102. Moviegoers are advised to get advance tickets at the box office or online, as shows may sell out. Arriving early is a good idea, in order to choose your seat and also order delicious food and wine or beer. In addition to the regular offerings, the new wine/food bar offers tempting food such as panini, flatbread, snacks and salads--and they can all be brought to your seat in the theater.
