Viewfinder: Mechanical Monsters and Human Allies Chomp Old Target

Workers knock down walls and gut the former Target store to make way for a new Safeway near Del Norte BART station.

Huge holes in the sides of the former Target store reveal a gutted interior as workers prepare the building for renovation into a new upscale "lifestyle" Safeway with full service deli, bakery, pharmacy, meat and seafood section, and organic produce area. The store is expected to open in August. Two existing Safeway stores on San Pablo Avenue, at Moeser in El Cerrito and Macdonald Avenue in Richmond, will close, with employees of those two stores moving to the new one. The project, just south of the Del Norte BART station, will also include smaller stores such as Pet Food Express, facing San Pablo Avenue.
