The Elk Grove Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Chan, currently has a membership of about 30 students and seeks to enlarge its membership. Chan invites interested young persons who would like the experience of playing in an orchestra to complete a membership application and schedule an audition. Although the Elk Grove Youth Orchestra is largely a string orchestra at this time, Chan seeks to include brass and woodwind players.
The Elk Grove Youth Orchestra performs two concerts per year. Their repertoire includes selections from traditional classical music, traditional Chinese music, jazz and pop music.
Director Michael Chan has accumulated over 30 years of experience in music instruction and performance. Prior to his immigration to the U.S., he was the principal of New Philharmonic Orchestra of Hong Kong. He was also the conductor of the Youth Orchestra of Hong Kong. His passion for helping young musicians led him to become the designated teacher for several esteemed schools in Hong Kong. Currently Michael Chan is the director of the Capitol Chinese Orchestra in Sacramento and the Elk Grove Youth Orchestra.
