Announcement posted by Moms in Motion Elk Grove
We can no longer ignore the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. It’s time to get our kids moving! Moms in Motion Elk Grove, together with the Northern Area Dietetic Association, recently gave a $3,000 grant to afterschool program Sacramento START to fund a new Walk Across America project.
This grant will help students get moving, stay active, involve their families and focus on their community. The Walk Across America project includes an after school walking program, pedometers to track distance, awards at key mileage achievements and special Friday night walks involving parents and health education.

The grant honors Vanessa Pullen of Galt, who in spring of 2009 died along with her family in a small plane crash. Vanessa was a Moms In Motion team member, a mom, an excellent pediatrician and well-known community member. Moms In Motion started a grant that year with NADA in her name and has been contributing to it each year with fundraising efforts in the community.
“I didn’t expect to be so emotional, but had tears in my eyes when I found out Vanessa’s grant had been awarded.” said Moms In Motion local leader Wendy Hoag.
