Assembly District 9: The Candidates

A half-dozen people are vying for the assembly district including Elk Grove.

Elk Grove residents headed to the polls Tuesday have six choices for . Some candidates are more prominent than others, and more than half of them have current or former ties to Elk Grove.

The two candidates who finish best in Tuesday's election will face off in a November runoff election. Here's a quick look at priorities they have outlined.

Democrats:

Richard Pan: One of the Sacramento Bee's two endorsees, Pan currently represents Assembly District 5. He moved to run for the newly created district. Pan hopes to focus on health care issues, and wants to create a health benefit exchange, according to the Lodi News-Sentinel.

Tom Santos: Elk Grove resident Santos told the Elk Grove Citizen that he wants to battle unemployment and the sluggish economy. He has previously run for Board of Equalization and Congress, according to the Lodi News-Sentinel.

Republicans:

Tony Amador: Amador is a retired U.S. Marshal, police officer and former Elk Grove resident who told the Lodi News-Sentinel he would increase spending on law enforcement; he also criticized environmental regulations.

Ed Nemeth: Nemeth, another Elk Grove resident seeking a seat in Assembly District 9, told the Lodi News-Sentinel he would focus on job creation.

Sophia Scherman: Scherman has been a member of the Elk Grove City Council since incorporation and was endorsed for the assembly seat by the Sacramento Bee, Scherman that one of her priorities would be reducing state mandates on emission controls.

Peace and Freedom:

C.T. Weber: Weber outlined an ambitious agenda to the Elk Grove Citizen that includes providing free college education, doubling minimum wage and abolishing the death penalty.
