PHOTOS: At Homecoming, Cosumnes Oaks Players Honor Teammate

Junior varsity wins, varsity loses, and students and staff remember player Jurelle Davis, who passed away this week.

The Cosumnes Oaks High School varsity football team's homecoming loss against Union Mine Friday was not as dramatic as the junior varsity team's 34-0 win.  You might say J.V. was playing with more motivation, as they had recently lost one of their own.  

Junior varsity player Jurelle Davis , and on Friday, his teammates held a special ceremony in his honor.

"It's a beautiful thing, the way the school came together. I'll never forget it," said Davis's father, Frederick Davis, after being presented with his son's jersey. (The team is retiring his number.)

Of the junior varsity team's win, head J.V. coach Steve Robards said, "It was the best we played, the most physical and the most emotional. They did for him." 

The varsity game ended with a 7-14 loss. The action picked up with two minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but the Wolfpack could not rally for the win.

"Tonight is bittersweet," said Principal Patrick McDougall. "Our school has had a really hard week. We're in pain, but we are trying to teach our kids to persevere, and push through."

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly attributed a quote about the junior varsity team's win to head varsity coach Ryan Gomes. In fact, it came from head junior varsity coach Steve Robards.
