Race prep tips from a busy mom
You can always count on a mom to give you the real lowdown, even when preparing for a running event.

As I prepared another group for the Urban Cow race this weekend, it occurred to me that there are a few items you just learn on the fly. Once you’ve done several events you get a routine going that works for you. Here are a few of my favorite tips learned firsthand from my mistakes, or the unfortunate circumstances of fellow Moms In Motion members. You can always count on a mom to give you the real lowdown.
- Carbo loading? It’s more important to eat well, hydrate and rest throughout your training, especially the week before. You can’t solve it all with a plate of spaghetti.
- Put out everything the night before. Breakfast, shoes, race number, socks...I left without my race number one morning, argh!
- Wake up early enough on race day to go potty at home. Period.
- Nothing new on race day. One past member wore new pants the day of the race and discovered mid race they rubbed in all the wrong places.
- Double-tie your shoes. It's a serious bummer to stop and lean over to lace up midway through your PR (personal record) attempt.
- Use sunscreen—but not on your forehead. It stings your eyes when you sweat, ouch!
- Pin your number on front of your shirt. Pin the bottom part to your pants so your tummy doesn’t show when you throw your hands in the air crossing the finish line in victory...unless you have a tummy you want to show off.
- More potty talk: If you must use the portables, go for the one on the end, go right before the event starts and avoid the first set on the course.
- First event? Longest event? Trying for a PR? Don’t be shy about asking friends or family to be there, or having a teammate complete the last mile with you.
Cherish the experience. Not everyone is able to do events or willing to put in the effort. Congratulations!!!!
