City Breaks Ground on Waste Collection Center

By next May, Elk Grove residents will have a local place to safely dispose of paint, fluorescent light bulbs, antifreeze and other hazardous materials.

The city on Thursday broke ground on a $4.6 million Special Waste Collection Center, which will accept household hazardous wastes and items like batteries, used oil, electronics and pharmaceuticals, according to a press release.

It will be located at 10401 Grant Line Rd.

"Currently Elk Grove’s household hazardous waste is transported by residents to facilities in the city or county of Sacramento," the press release states. "When open, the new facility will improve environmental impact, make recycling more convenient, and encourage proper disposal of hazardous materials."

Elk Grove Mayor Jim Cooper said it's important to recycle these materials properly so they don't end up in a landfill where they could seep into the groundwater, according to a written copy of his speech from the event.

The city will receive a total of $400,000 in grant funding from CalRecycle to build the facility.
