Elk Grove Man Injured in Bay Area Pileup

A four-vehicle collision involving a big-rig full of wine disrupted traffic in both directions for seven hours on Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward this morning, California Highway Patrol officials said.

At 2:59 a.m. CHP officials received calls reporting the collision on southbound I-880 just south of A Street. Witnesses reported that a disabled vehicle with its lights off was blocking one lane when a GMC street sweeper hit it, CHP officials said.

Then a 2012 Kenworth big-rig carrying wine swerved to avoid the two vehicles and collided with the center divider, knocking down a highway sign and overturning. The truck and trailer blocked all southbound lanes and the fallen freeway sign blocked the northbound lanes.

A 2013 Ford C-Max collided with the big-rig after it came to a stop. The C-Max driver, a 62-year-old Elk Grove man, suffered major injuries.

The 67-year-old driver of the big-rig and a 32-year-old man from Petaluma suffered moderate injuries in the collision.

All northbound lanes were shut down until 7:59 a.m. as crews used a crane to remove the damaged sign, according to CHP officials. The big-rig was uprighted and taken to the A Street on-ramp to southbound I-880 to have its wine unloaded.

All southbound lanes reopened at 10:05 a.m.

The on-ramp reopened at about 1:30 p.m.
