Elk Grove Notables Put on Their Dancing Shoes

Teams said Friday night's "Dancing with the Strauss Festival Stars" competition was more about fun and fundraising than winning.

Elk Grove hosted its own "Dancing with the Stars" Friday night as local celebrities, including the city's mayor, partnered with Strauss Festival dancers in a dance competition at the .

The friendly competition was part of a gala held as a fundraiser for Elk Grove's annual Strauss Festival, which will take place next month.

Dancing in the "Celebrity Gala - Dancing with the Strauss Festival Stars," were Mayor Steven Detrick; Oscar O'con, past president of Elk Grove Rotary Club; Angi Perry, executive director of the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce and Lisa Brown, owner of Encore! Studio of Performing Arts.

Their partners were Strauss Festival dancers RaeLynn Springer, Lauralee Meyer, Benny Judeh and Jonathan Thurston.

Although it was a competition, all of the pairs—who each held several practice sessions to prepare—agreed the night was about having fun and raising money for the Strauss Festival, not about winning.

In addition to the dance competition, the gala also included silent auctions, raffles, appetizers provided by local restaurants, a wine and martini bar and performances by the Dewald-Taylor Jazztet and , Elk Grove Teen Idol 2011.

All funds raised at the gala will benefit the Strauss Festival of Elk Grove. The festival, held July 28 - 31 on Strauss Island in , is free to the public.
