Elk Grove's Future Olympian?
Eleven-year-old Shasta Ayala is on a path to become one of the nation's top gymnasts.
Shasta Ayala dreams of Olympic glory. At eleven years old, the gymnast is competing at level nine, the second-highest rank an amateur in her sport can achieve.
She jumped from level seven to level nine in just a year’s time, a rare occurrence, said her coach, Eli Rodriguez of Byer Gymnastics Center.
“She has been one of the most improved kids I’ve worked with in a long time,” Rodriguez said.

Ayala's next goal: to become part of the USA Gymnastics Elite Program—a select group eligible for Olympic competition, in which only about 70 gymnasts across the United States participate. Just two elite program gymnasts live in Northern California; one of them, Nichelle Christopherson, also trains with Rodriguez.
Ayala does her schooling at home so she can train in the mornings and afternoons. When Elk Grove Patch caught up with her on a recent weekday, she was still out of breath from practicing a routine, but took a moment to talk to us about her goals.

What got you into gymnastics?
I was two years old and full of energy. I think my Mom wanted me to do something.
You have moved up the ranks so quickly. What keeps you so focused?
We were working over the summer and learning new skills. Everyone was so supportive of me. They told me, ‘I think you can make it, I think you can do level 9.’ There was a lot to keep me motivated.
What do you love most about gymnastics?
I love learning new things and I love being able to compete. I like showing other people what I can do.
Is it easy for you to stay so committed?
Most of the time, yes. Sometimes, there are things I wish I could do right away, but I know that in gymnastics I have to stick to it and stay committed.
What is the biggest challenge in gymnastics?
Dealing with frustration as I continue to get better. But my mom always tries to talk me through it.
Do you have certain athletes whom you look up to in your sport?
Makayla Stambaugh. She’s competing at Oregon State now. My mom used to tutor her ever since I was little. There is a lot I learned from her.
What type of routines are your favorites?
I like everything (laughs). I do like bars though; it’s one of my favorites.
What are your ultimate goals for gymnastics?
I want to be in the 2016 Olympics.
Do you have any favorite Olympians in gymnastics?
Probably Nastia Liukin.
