As time has gone on, we have been asked by many parents if we do the teen heart screenings to detect any indication for Sudden Cardiac Death. With the news of the 11-year-old boy of Garden Valley suddenly dying on the football field last August, we decided that it was time to start heart screenings for the teens playing sports. We have gathered a great team to help provide the heart screenings. We have cardiac sonographers from Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento. Also, we have board certified cardiologists from Sacramento Heart and Vascular reading the screenings and providing reports. Echocardiograms and EKG’s will be performed during the screenings. The most common abnormality of the heart that leads to sudden cardiac death during sports activities is HCM or Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It is estimated that HCM affects 1 in 500 of all ages. This condition can definitely be seen with an echocardiogram which is an ultrasound of the heart. Other abnormalities can be seen on an echo or an EKG. Along with a sports physical and family history, doctors can help kids get treatment for these conditions. These are treatable conditions once they are detected.
