Trig Star is an annual high school mathematics competition based on the practical application of trigonometry. The competition helps bridge the gap between the usage of trigonometry in “the real world” and theoretical concepts that students learn in the classroom. Students that participate are not only provided with an opportunity to earn awards, but also leave with a better understanding of the technical profession of Land Surveying and Mapping.
The competition consists of a timed exercise that involves solving trigonometry problems using triangle formulas, circle formulas, the law of sines and the law of cosines. Chung successfully completed his test – and received a perfect score – in less than 22 minutes, 12 minutes faster than the runner-up. He also participated in the National Trig*Star test as the representative from California. He placed 21st among other state winners.
