Mobile Food Fest Comes to Elk Grove Thursday

Locals can nosh on snacks from four popular food trucks in the Calvine Storage Kings parking lot from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The parking lot of Calvine Storage Kings will be transformed into a temporary gourmet food court Thursday evening as four mobile food trucks—Miniburger, Drewski's Hot Rod Kitchen, Wicked Wich and Mama Kim's—gather to feed hungry Elk Grove foodies.

Organized on Twitter in less than 48 hours, the event is a miniature version of SactoMoFo, a wildly popular meals-on-wheels festival held in Sacramento earlier this year. It will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Catherine Enfield, a food blogger who helped organize the Sacramento event, hit the Twitter feed Tuesday evening, asking Elk Grovians if they would “represent” if the food trucks showed up. The idea quickly caught on, spawning the hashtag #EGwantstrucks.

“I started the tweet movement, then the Elk Grove folks really took it on themselves,” Enfield said.

With Elk Grove tweeps like online marketer Tessa Szymkiewicz spreading the word, a location was secured by Wednesday afternoon.

“That’s how fast Twitter moves,” Szymkiewicz said. “It’s just a movement of people, kind of like a flash mob of people making something happen at the mall.”

While mobile food trucks have , it’s the first time this many of them will roll up to a single location.

“Elk Grove is always good to us.  We have good fans out there,” said Miniburger owner Davin Vculek. “But most of us are based out of Sacramento—Elk Grove can be far to travel for sales that we could make or beat in closer areas.”

With Thursday a kind of test run for whether Elk Grove can support these culinary entrepreneurs, Szymkiewicz said she hopes for a high turnout.

“The point is to show them [food trucks] that people want them down here,” she said.
