Patch Gives Away $100K to Schools at Elk Grove-Davis Game

Davis family is the lucky winner of Patch's 'Deck the House' holiday decoration contest.

Hundreds of people turned up for the game—a nailbiter that went into triple overtime. Many stopped by the Patch booth to sign up for email newsletters and pick up free Patch merchandise, and thank the Powell family for making this happen. See photos of this awesome event on Davis Patch.

When the Thundering Herd takes on the Davis Blue Devils in Davis Friday, the action won't just be on the basketball court. At halftime, Patch will present Davis public schools with a check for $100,000—the grand prize in .

Davis couple Kristy and Jim Powell won the most votes in Patch's 'Deck the House' contest with their creative '' display, netting $500 towards their own electricity bill and a cool $100K for their local school district. Patch readers from Davis, and 850+ other communities around the country competed in the contest, which ran through December.

“The community worked together; everyone was tweeting, posting on Facebook, and emailing the news," said Kristy Powell.

Powell and Davis Patch Local Editor Justin Cox will make the presentation to Davis Schools Superintendent Winfred Roberson.

While we're disappointed Elk Grove didn't win Deck the House, we're so inspired that another Sacramento-area Patch did, that we'll forgive them for rubbing our noses in it. And we'll look forward to an Elk Grove victory next year...or perhaps Friday on the court.

'Deck the House' is Patch’s third national contest to date.  Prior contests were a Mother’s Day 'Spaliday' sweepstakes in May of 2011 to give Patch moms a welcome spa retreat from their hectic lives, and ',' for Halloween 2011, in which the supermodel selected the most creative costume of the season from thousands of photos submitted through the Patch community.
