Students at Merryhill Elementary School in Elk Grove Collect Recyclables to Raise $300 for Flint Water Crisis

ELK GROVE, Calif. – On April 20, students from Merryhill Elementary School on Calvine Road in Elk Grove delivered 48 pounds of recyclables to RePlanet Recycling Center and donated the $300 of proceeds they raised to the Flint Child Health and Development Fund. The donation was part of a school-wide recycling collection of cans, plastic and glass recyclables throughout the month of April, leading up to Earth Day. In their classrooms, students researched and learned about the Flint, Mich., water crisis. Sixth-grade students led the project and sorted and transported the recyclables to the center.

The Flint Child Health and Development Fund, established at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, is a supplemental resource to the ongoing pursuit of state and federal funding. Donations to the fund will be used to aid children with interventions that support positive health outcomes for Flint children, including research, safe and healthy home environments, access to infant and child behavioral health services, nutrition education and integrated social services.
