USS Hornet Opens New Exhibition: “Quilts of Valor”
A local World War II Pearl Harbor survivor and Vietnam Veteran to receive quilts
A new museum exhibition and a special presentation to two local veterans - a World War II veteran and a Vietnam veteran – will highlight the USS Hornet’s Living Ship Day on Aug. 17.

The “Quilts of Valor” exhibit honors Northern California veterans who have been wounded while serving our country. As part of this exhibit, special quilts will be presented to veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor E.J. Chuck Kohler and Vietnam veteran Howard “Will” Williams who served as a Navy Sea Bee on several tours in Vietnam. The unveiling of the exhibit and the quilt presentation will take place at 1 p.m.
In addition, Mr. Kohler will give a firsthand account of the Dec. 7, 1941 attack "The Day that Lived in Infamy." He was with Aerial Patrol Squadron VP#23 on Ford Island in the center of Pearl Harbor.

“Quilts of Valor” will be on display from Aug. 17 through Nov. 11, 2013 in the Wardroom. The patriotic-themed quilts were made by members of the Amador Valley Quilters in Pleasanton.
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The Amador Valley Quilters’ “Quilts of Valor” program is modeled after the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
The public and media are welcome aboard the Hornet from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Hornet is located at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Alameda.
Living Ship Day aboard the Hornet offers something for everyone. The museum comes to life as an operating aircraft carrier with flight simulations between 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. as aircraft are lifted to the flight deck and placed into launch position. Visitors can meet former crew, sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet, and enjoy the sights and sounds of naval aviation.
Living Ship Day demonstrations are held on the third Saturday of most months. Normal museum hours and admission prices apply. Ample free parking is available across from the pier.
