A farm in Sloughhouse has offered to let the Elk Grove Food Bank Services take some free produce, but the organization needs help getting it.
The food bank is asking for groups of volunteers interested in 2-and-a-half-hour shifts picking produce at Davis Ranch, which grows corn, strawberries, watermelons, tomatoes and other crops. Davis Ranch donates crops to a number of local food banks.
Volunteer groups need to have 10 to 20 people, and will have the chance to pick produce after the ranch has harvested its first crop.
Volunteers will start work at 7 a.m., and are encouraged to wear a hat, gloves, long-sleeve shirt, pants and closed-toed shoes. Picking produce for the food bank can count as community service hours for local high school students, the food bank said.
Volunteers must be at least high-school-aged.
Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call Deborah Luck at 916-685-8453.
