ENCINITAS, CA — A train fatally struck a pedestrian Thursday at a transit depot near Moonlight State Beach.

The southbound Amtrak train hit the person shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday at Encinitas Station, 25 E. D St. in Encinitas, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. The victim died at the scene, Lt. Joe Barry said.

It was unclear what the person was doing on the tracks. Further details, including the pedestrian's identity, remained unavailable as of late afternoon.
