ENCINITAS, CA — A gun buyback event will take place this weekend in Encinitas in an effort to get unwanted weapons off the streets, authorities said.
The gun safety event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Encinitas City Hall.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Carlsbad Police Department and Oceanside Police Department to collect guns in exchange for gift cards.
People who donate handguns, rifles and shotguns will receive $100 gift cards, while those who trade in assault weapons and ghost guns will receive $200 gift cards, according to the sheriff's office. Free firearm trigger locks will also be distributed while supplies last.
Firearms must be in working order, unloaded and placed in the trunk of the vehicle dropping them off. A deputy or officer will provide instructions, officials said.
All weapons collected will be destroyed, according to the sheriff's office. Residents turning in weapons can remain anonymous.
Encinitas City Hall is at 505 South Vulcan Ave. in Encinitas.
