ENCINITAS, CA — Encinitas Oktoberfest will celebrate its 30th year this month with German food and beer, live entertainment, family activities and more than 130 artisans and vendors.
The free festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, along Mountain Vista Drive between Wandering and Rambling roads, according to the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce.
The event will feature German music and dance performances, a ceremonial parade at noon, two beer gardens, a dog costume contest and stein-holding competitions for adults and children. A kids' play zone will offer inflatable slides, an obstacle course, games and a rock-climbing wall.
Traditional German fare, including sausages, bratwurst and pretzels, will be available, along with German brews, beer from local breweries, wine and other beverages.
The festival also pays tribute to the area's German heritage. Olivenhain, now part of Encinitas, was founded by German settlers in 1884.
"Encinitas Oktoberfest brings the best of Bavaria to the California coast and is the perfect way to kick off the fall season," said Carol Knight, CEO of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and Visit Encinitas.
"For three decades, Encinitas Oktoberfest has brought residents and visitors together to kick off fall with great food, lively entertainment and unmistakable coastal spirit," Knight said. "It's festive, family-friendly and truly one of a kind — just like Encinitas."
The festival, which stretches about one-third of a mile, draws more than 15,000 people annually, according to organizers.
A free shuttle will run from 10 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. between the Flora Vista Elementary School parking lot and the corner of Mountain Vista Drive and Wandering Road. Bike parking will be available at both ends of the festival, including a free bike valet at the Wandering Road entrance.
